Ringgold Downtown Development Authority plans to place a commemorative plaque at the site of the rebuilt former city hall building on Mountain Street.

The building, now the office of Lighthouse Foster Care, was the city hall for years before the new city hall opened on Tennessee Street in 2000.

The site was destroyed by a tornado on April 27, 2011, and according to DDA chairman and city council member G. Larry Black, the plan is for a plaque to be placed at the building explaining its history and resurgence.

“We have other plaques and markers throughout the city and we’re hoping to get this one there at old city hall soon,” Black said.

The matter was tabled at the most recent DDA meeting on Monday, Feb. 18, so that the plaque’s exact wordage and names could be agreed on.

The meeting also consisted of on update on Home Plate Grill restaurant that is slated to join other downtown eateries in early March.

“They’re working on the new restaurant right now, with a tentative opening date of March 5,” Black said. “It’s supposed to be a down-home Southern cooking type of restaurant that, I believe, is owned by the same folks that own Choo Choo BBQ & Grill in Chickamauga.”

Home Plate Grill will be in the building that was the former home of the Tiger’s Den Sandwich Shoppe.

“We’ll be glad to get another restaurant in our downtown area,” Black said. “The more we can offer people more likely they are to spend time in our downtown area.”
