Tim Elliot's fourth block construction class at Ringgold High School was called upon by Ringgold mayor Joe Barger for a special project recently.

Barger said the city needed more crosses to hold the flags that adorn the streets of Ringgold on military holidays. Elliot said the class was honored to be chosen for the challenge.

“He (Barger) came and met with the students and thanked them for helping him,” Elliot said. “Once they found out what the project was for and who it was for, they were really excited. I was in the Marine Corps for five years, so it was a real honor for me as well.”

Elliot said the class of 17 students made 54 crosses for the city of Ringgold. Although most crosses and flags generally line the downtown streets, Elliot said some would be placed near the school in the future. Leslie Davis, a Ringgold senior in the class, said seeing the crosses on flag days would have a different meaning from now on.

“Making the crosses made me feel more like a part of Ringgold,” Davis said. “It made me feel good to give back to the community.”
