Bobby Lamar Hinds, 59, Chattanooga

Bobby Lamar Hinds of Chattanooga died Thursday, August 24, 2012. He was 59.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Chattanooga; he was a self-employed auto mechanic and enjoyed riding motorcycles. He loved spending time with family and friends, and was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Catherine Hinds; brother, Gene Hinds, and sister, Judy Staulkub.

Survivors include his brothers, Jack (Dianne) Hinds of Mich., and Charles Hinds of Texas; nieces, Christy Hill and Gina Ortiz; other nieces, nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; stepchildren, Danny, Steven, Ricky, Wayne and Mark West; special friends, Priscilla Leaderman and Bo Williamson.

Myrtle “Nonnie” Young Hartline, 90, Chickamauga

Myrtle “Nonnie” Young Hartline of Chickamauga died Friday, August 24, 2012. She was 90.

A resident of the north Georgia area for the past 57 years, she was a former employee of Hutcheson Medical Center and a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin and Sarah Rindie Young and eleven siblings.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Reisman Mitts of Chickamauga; two sisters, Vina Mowell of Memphis, Tenn., and Billie Kramer of Goshen, Ohio; grandson, Edward (Alice) Reisman of Chickamauga; two grandchildren, Brandon and Bailey Reisman of Chickamauga; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services: Private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hutcheson Hospice.

Joyce Crump Leffew, 68, Chickamauga

Joyce Crump Leffew of Chickamauga died Friday August 24, 2012. She was 68.

A resident of the north Georgia area for most of her life, she was a former employee of Cracker Barrel where she worked for 14 years, was a member of the VFW ladies auxillary and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her father, Avery Crump and daddy, Edward Oliver.

Survivors include her mother, Helen Dalton Oliver of Chickamauga; three daughters, Paula Boydston Steele of Ringgold, Karen (Phillip) Templeton of Chickamauga, and Stacey (Dewrock) Scott of Flintstone; brother, J.D. (Nancy) Cox of Crawfordville; seven grandchildren, Amy (Chad), Megan (Jason), Chris (Lauren), Zach, Austin, Savannah (Rob), and Becca; nine great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Homer Edgar Neely, 81, Rossville

Homer Edgar Neely of Rossville died Saturday August 25, 2012. He was 81.

A resident of the Harrison, Tennessee, area for most of his life, he was a former employee of the Cavalier Corporation and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Paulette Neely; parents, Oscar Edgar and Julie Dove Barbee Neely; and sister, Louise Gray.

Survivors include his seven children, Dianne White of Birchwood, Tenn., Steven (Pam) Neely of Ringgold, Carolyn (James) Catchings of Harrison, Tenn., Teresa (Roger) Dobbins of Ooltewah, Tenn., Ronald Meely of Ringgold, Jackie Neely of Ringgold, and Carlton Morrison of Rossville; two sisters, Birtie Ramsey and Leon Brady both of Cleveland, Tenn.; brother, Oscar “Doc” Neely of Red Bank, Tenn.; eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Faye Hall Mauk, 88, LaFayette

Faye Hall Mauk of LaFayette died Saturday, August 25, 2012. She was 88.

She was born to the late Jesse and Lula Rogers Hall in Clark County, Illinois, on May 13, 1924. She was a member of LaFayette United Methodist Church, a member of the Eastern Star since 1945 and she enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her family. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Warren Hall; sister, Thelma Stephen; grandchildren, Skye Oliver and Lawrence Alan Mauk; son-in-law, Ronnie Oliver.

Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Darrell Mauk; daughter, Connie Oliver, both of LaFayette; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Gay Mauk of Terre Haute, Ind., Lloyd and Judy Mauk of Rock Spring and Stanley and Martha Mauk of Manchester, Tenn.; two sisters, Mildred Stephen of Martinsville, Ill., and Barbara Patterson of Terre Haute, Ind.; brother, Harold Hall of Neoga, Ill.; nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Harold Lee White, 85, Flintstone

Harold Lee White of Flintstone died Saturday August 25, 2012. He was 85.

A resident of the north Georgia area most of his life, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Seabees where he served during WWII, a former employee of Uniform Rental Service where he retired as General Manager and a member of Lookout Baptist Church. He was a charter member of the Chattanooga Valley Lions Club with over 42 years of perfect attendance, serving as president five times and was a member of the Rossville Masonic Lodge #397 F&AM.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Grace Evelyn Hickey White; parents, James William “Whistle” and Mable White; stepson, Danny Cummings; sister, Margaret Williams; brother, James Albert White and one grandson.

Survivors include sons, Jerry (Karen) White of Ringgold, and Don (Joyce) White of Chattanooga, Tenn.; daughter, Reba (George) Perry of Flintstone; step-sons, Ken Killingsworth and David (Sharon) Cummings and step-daughter, Judy (Johnny) Huckabee all of Lookout Valley; brother, Ray (Betty) White of Rochester, Texas; sister, Jean Hubbard of Ft. Ronald Pruett of Rossville died Monday, August 27, 2012 in a local hospice facility. He was 57.

Goldie Mae Parks Cunningham, 97, Chattanooga

Goldie Mae Parks Cunningham of Chattanooga died Monday, August 27, 2012. She was 97.

She was born on February 4, 1915, in Luther, Oklahoma. She was married to Clarence Cunningham in Pratt, Kansas, on October 19, 1935. They resided on a small farm near Cunningham, Kansas, for over fifty years until her husband’s passing. She then moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, and later to Chattanooga. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by her son, Danny Cunningham; her parents, William and Lizzie Parks; sisters, Ruth Shepard, Martha McIntire, and Esther Combs; and brothers, Clarence, Robert, and John Parks.

She will be remembered as a very alert, “spunky” little lady who enjoyed chatting, keeping up on current affairs (especially golfing and the Denver Broncos) and spending time with her family. In her younger years, she loved to dance and at recent birthday parties she would be twirled around in her wheelchair and her feet would be tapping! She will be greatly missed by those who knew her and would best be described as a “survivor” for through each trial, illness and heartache, she never quit. A special thank you is extended to the nurses and staff of Alexian Brothers, Brother Andrew and Dr. Berry.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and William Harding; grandsons, Christopher and Jonathan Harding, all of Rock Spring; sister, Nancy Culbertson, of Weed, Calif. and Anna Mae Combs, of Independence, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Virginia Greer of Langdon, Kan. and Lucille Pomeroy of Md.

Sue J. Plemons of Abbeville died August 27, 2012, at her residence. She was 72.

She was born December 28, 1939, in Adairsville. She was the daughter of the late William Luther Jarrett and Susie Ann Waters Jarrett. She was an inspection supervisor with Ithaca Manufacturing Company and was a member of the Rochelle United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Harold R. Plemons of Abbeville; son, Jamie Plemons of Summerville, S.C.; brothers, John M. Jarrett of Byron and Ray L. Jarrett of Lilburn; sister, Shirley Ann Futral of Albany and three grandchildren.

Leona Metcalf Pierce, 90, Chickamauga

Leona Metcalf Pierce of Chickamauga died Tuesday, August 28, 2012. She was 90.

She was born in Macon to the late W. L. and Nellie Mae Gladson and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Tom Brown, Gus Metcalf and Earl Pierce; son, Martin Thomas Brown; three brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include her grandchildren, Andrew Oliver Brown, Thomas Earl Brown, Donna Roland; four great-grandchildren; special niece, Faye Thomas-Morris; and many nieces and nephews.

Billy Joe Murray, 73, Ringgold

Billy Joe Murray of Ringgold died Wednesday, August 22, 2012. He was 73.

He had lived in the north Georgia are for most of his life and was of the Assembly of God faith. He enlisted in the National Guard in 1963 and was an Army veteran having served during Desert Storm before retiring in the early 90’s. He retired from DuPont after more than 30 years of service and was an avid Georgia Bulldog and Atlanta Braves fan. He also loved horses and was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all that he touched during his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Bonnie Murray; sister, Betty Culberson and grandson, Jeremy Puryear.

Survivors include his loving wife of more than 36 years, Helen Murray; three children, Teresa Puryear, Eric Murray and Tracey Murray; brother, Gary Murray of LaFayette; two sisters, Vicki Vaughn and Debbie Avans both of Rossville; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service: Saturday, August 25, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Luke Camlic and Rev. Jason Willis officiating. Burial: Lakewood East Memory Gardens. Visitation: Friday, August 24, after 4 p.m. and prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Pauline J. (Grannie) Adams, 85, Trion

Pauline J. (Grannie) Adams of Trion died August 21, 2012, at her residence. She was 85.

She was born October 20, 1926, the daughter of the late Edwin E. and Virgie Lee Jackson and was preceded in death by her husband Nipp S. Adams; one son-in-law, Melvin L. Adams, and one great-grandchild, Ashley Nicole Wright. She was a retiree of Mount Vernon Mills. She was a member of the Trion United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sisters and one brother-in-law, Eudene Mann, and Anna Lee and George Baird; one brother and one sister-in-law, Earl and Betty Jackson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Raymond and Wanda Murphy and Don and Juanita Henderson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry S. and Lucy Adams and John B. and Georgia Mae Adams; seven granddaughters and six grandsons-in-law, Dickie and Cindy Anderson, Alan and Gwenette Powell, Preston and Paula Stephenson, Philip and Angie Wells, Travis and Barda Swinford, Cheryl and Barry Kauffman, and Beth Henderson; six grandsons and one granddaughter-in-law, Robert Adams, Jonathan Henderson, Mark Spencer Henderson, Ray Murphy, Phaisit Kimakom, and Randy and Misty Adams.

Surviving are nine great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons-in-law, Mickey and Stephanie Floyd, Jeremy and Ginger Overby, Christina Powell, Tiffany Wright, Brittany Wright, Kylie Swinford, Hailey Adams, Ryleigh Ivers and Christian Wells; six great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter-in-law, Jeremy and Megan Anderson, Cody Siffles, Matthew Adams, Nathan and Caleb Kauffman, and Trevor Swinford. One great- great-granddaughter, Jordon Floyd, and seven great-great-grandsons, Tony Floyd, Nathan and Braden Willingham, Layton and Jackson Overby, and Ryan and Brantley Anderson; and several nieces and nephews also survived.

Dorotha Ann Crutchfield Perry, 87

Dorotha Ann Crutchfield Perry died Tuesday, August 21, 2012. She was 87.

She was born to the late H.A. (Alec), and Virginia Crutchfield on February 5, 1925. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, James O. Perry; her grandson, Richard Webb; granddaughter, Shari Webb Rogers, and her sister, Elizabeth Helton. She was a member of The Cassandra Baptist Church and enjoyed raising flowers, gardening, sewing, crocheting, and being with her family and friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Gayle (Danny) Webb, of LaFayette; son, Randy (Mary) Perry, of Rock Spring; two very special great-grandsons, Brody and Grayson, Rogers, of LaFayette; three brothers, Johnny (Joann) Crutchfield, Ted Crutchfield, all of Soddy Daisy, Tenn., Ed Crutchfield, of Hight Point; many special nieces, nephews, and numerous friends also survive.

Margaret Ann Spence Smith, 71, LaFayette

Margaret Ann Spence Smith of LaFayette died Sunday, August 19, 2012. She was 71.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ray Smith, brother, Travis Spence, parents, Erby and Fronia Spence.

Survivors include her daughters, Roxie and husband Bill Hurley, of Summerville, Nonie Jenkins, of LaFayette, Kelly and husband, Eric Careathers, of LaFayette; son, Tim and wife Sherry Davis, of Ringgold; brothers, C.L. and wife Linda Spence, Jerry and wife Brenda Spence, all of LaFayette; nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Thelma Mae Tinker Vaughn, 92, Chickamauga

Thelma Mae Tinker Vaughn of Chickamauga died Monday, August 20, 2012. She was 92.

She was born in Jackson County, Alabama, to the late Henderson Parmley Tinker and Mary Anne “Molly” Edwards Tinker. She had resided in Chickamauga for the past sixty years and was of the Baptist faith. She worked in the cafeteria at Pond Springs School for several years. She also had worked at Crystal Springs Mill in Chickamauga. She loved to cook and travel. She enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, making crafts, sewing and reading.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James David “J.D.” Vaughn; daughters-in-law, Polly and Ida Vaughn and several siblings.

Survivors include her sons, Ernest Paul Vaughn, James Kenneth Vaughn both of Chickamauga; daughter, Carolyn Sue; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Alene Walden of Lookout Mountain died August 16, 2012. She was 91.

Gary B. Fillers, 74, Chattanoooga

Gary B. Fillers of Chattanooga died Monday, August 20, 2012, in a local hospital. He was 74.

He was a member of South Seminole Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a prominent business owner of several companies in Chattanooga beginning in 1963. He was a devoted and loving husband and caregiver for his wife, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Chelsea Ava Fillers, and his parents, Elmer and Thelma Moses Fillers.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Nancy Toomey Fillers; sons, Jeff (Debbie) Fillers, Scott Fillers and Chris (Ginger) Fillers; grandchildren, Brent (Lauren) Fillers, Jason (Sabrina) Fillers, Jessica Fillers, Carman Fillers, Jordan Fillers and John Luke Fillers; brothers, Don, Ron, Tom, and Mark Fillers; sisters, Judy Grammer, Carolyn Turner and Mary Lou Brown; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Sylvia Gloer of LaFayette died Friday, August 17, 2012, from complications of cancer, diabetes, kidney and liver disease.

She was loved by everyone especially by her many friends, children and her husband of 55 years, Alton. She was born to the late Thomas and Parris Farmer in Trion, was of the Christian faith and she and her husband were foster parents to 38 children.

Betty Gravitt White of LaFayette died Saturday, August 18, 2012. She was 82.

She was born to the late Huey and Cecile Rogers Hampton on March 21, 1930, in LaFayette. She was a member of Shattuck Boulevard Church of Christ, former manager of Dixie Dime in LaFayette, and she enjoyed crochet, crossword puzzles, gardening and spending time with her family.

She was also preceded in death by two husbands, Junior Gravitt and Archie White; brothers, Harold, H.D. and Bob Hampton; sister, Dorothy Hampton.

Survivors include five children, Linda Gail Muse of Chickamauga, Becky (Jerry) Crowe of Trion, Jesse Wayne (Cheryl) Gravitt of LaFayette, Johnny (Debbie) Gravitt of Rock Spring, Jeff (Mellisa) Gravitt of Inman, S.C.; sister, Gin Wooten of LaFayette; brother, Allen Hampton of Cedar Bluff, Ala.; 19 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Joy Ann Smithson O’Toole of LaFayette dide Sunday, August 19, 2012. She was 65.

She was born to the late Arthur and Toni Smithson on June 23, 1946, in New York City, N.Y., and she was of the Baptist faith. Her family was her world, especially her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Arthur and David Smithson.

Survivors include her loving husband, William Joseph “Bill” O’Toole; children, William Patrick (Bonnie) O’Toole, Debra Ann O’Toole, Michael John (Brittany) O’Toole; brothers, William Smithson and John Bayduss; sister, Andrea Bayduss; six grandchildren, Alayna Brooke O’Toole, Kevin Charles O’Toole, Meghan Marie O’Toole, Katelyn Rose O’Toole, Garron Taylor O’Toole and Madison Grace O’Toole.

James Lee Lawson of LaFayette died Saturday August 18, 2012. He was 83.

Preceded in death by his wife Ruth Lawson; daughter Glenda Scott; and son James Lester Lawson.

Survivors include his daughter, Barbara Carter, of Summerville; sons, Thomas Lawson, of Soddy-Daisy, Bobby Lawson, of Trion, Kenneth Lawson, of Chickamauga; sisters, Irene Lawson, of Fla., Mary Duke, of Tifton; brother, Jimmy Lawson, of Fla.; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren one step granddaughter, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Susie Hughes Cooper, 93, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Susie Hughes Cooper of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, August 20, 2012. She was 93.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area she was a former employee of DeSota where she worked for 21 years and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her five brothers, Earl Hughes, Charlie Hughes, Calvin Hughes, Alfred Hughes and Henry Hughes; and two sisters, Pauline Carey and Allie Brannon.

Survivors include her children, Wanda (Robert) Freeman of Ringgold, Jerry Vineyard of Chattanooga, and Mildred (Joe) DiGivonno of Redwood Valley, Calif.; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Mary Louise Blair Willie, 97, Signal Mountain, Tenn.

Mary Louise Blair Willie of Signal Mountain, Tenn., died at Alexian Health Care Center on Signal Mountain. She was born on September 1, 1914, in Gary, Ind., daughter of the late James Hardy Blair and Melissa Viola Hatley Blair and the widow of John Frederick (Jack) Willie.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her sister, Frances B. Applegate and brother, James H. Blair.

Survivors include her son, John F. Willie Jr.; daughters, Kathie W. Phillips, Susan W. Walker (Johnnie) Mary W. (Jim) Lynn; six grandchildren, James R. Sheorn III (Melissa), Mary Kathryn Moore (Bill), Samuel A. Houck, Kathryn D. Houck, Aaron J. Avakian (Becky), John F. Avakian (Crystal); four step-grandchildren, Kimberly M. Escalante, Dorothy W. Bailey (Ray), Kellie W Herlong (Michael); Stephanie Lynn; sixteen great-grandchildren.

Mary Virginia Jennings of Ringgold died Wednesday, August 15, 2012. She was 81.

She was born in Cleveland, Tenn. to the late Western and Rosetta Standridge and was a member of Burning Bush Baptist Church.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Jennings, and daughter, Elizabeth Walker.

Survivors include her children, Charles (Edna) Jennings of Fort Payne, Earl Jennings of Rocky Face, Eva (Steve) Hanshaw, Nancy Byrd all of Ringgold, Rose (Hershel) O’Dell of Henegar, Ala.; siblings, Warren Standridge of Huntsville, Ala., Frances Jewell of LaFayette, Charles Standridge of Oklahoma, Billy Standridge of Ringgold, Bonnie Drake, Patsy McElkannon both of Atlanta; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Nannie Lee Ewing Godfrey Hullender of Chatsworth died Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at her residence. She was 74.

A resident of the north Georgia area for the past 22 years, she was formerly of Dayton, Tenn. She was a former employee of the Whitfield County School System where she taught at Valley Point Middle School for 33 years and was a member of Mt. Rachel Baptist Church in Dalton.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Earl Hullender, and parents, Billy and Julia Ruth Ewing.

Survivors include her stepdaughter, Debbie West of St. Petersburg, Fla.; brother, Bill (Norita) Ewing of Dayton, Tenn.; nephew, Bart (Tina) Ewing of Dayton, Tenn.; great niece, Tiffany Ewing; and caregivers, E.J. Black, Amy Carter, Debbie Janow, Kim Davis and Hayley King.

Ronald Morris Lewallen, 71, Chattanooga

Ronald Morris Lewallen of Chattanooga died Friday, August 10, 2012, in a local health care facility. He was 71. He was a graduate of Danville High School in Kentucky and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was employed as a sales representative with Diversified Tile.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewitt T. and Lida Lewallen; son, Paul Adam Helton; grandson, Mason Berrios; sisters, Ermine Stephens and Jean Cooper; and brother, Dewitt Lewallen.

Survivors include his sons, Ronald Lewallen, II and Thomas “T. J.” Lewallen; daughters, Cynthia Berrios and Pamela Faludy; sisters, Mary Hearne, Johanna Herrmann and Tina Ray; six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Private services for the family will be held later in Danville, Kentucky.

Juanita Joyce Smith, 79 Chattanooga

Juanita Joyce Smith of Chattanooga died Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at her residence.

She was a native of DeKalb County, Ala., but had lived the greater part of her life in Chattanooga. She was a loving wife and homemaker, and was preceded in death by her father, Iris Brown and mother, Edna Holloway.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Hurley Ray Smith; brothers and sisters-in-law, Cecil Clovis and Burma Brown of Blairsville and Paul Richey and Charlotte Brown of Quitman, Miss.; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends are left to cherish her memory.

Funeral service: Friday, Aug. 31, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Leon Champion and Rev. Dallas Howard officiating. Burial: New Home Cemetery, Henagar, Ala. Visitation: Thursday, Aug. 31, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
