The preliminary unemployment rate in the northwest Georgia area rose to 9.7 percent in December, up one-tenth of a percentage point from 9.6 percent in November. The jobless rate in northwest Georgia in December a year ago was 10.9 percent.

Metro-Athens and Warner Robins had the lowest area rates at 7.3 percent, while metro-Dalton had the highest at 12.1 percent.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined in December for the third straight month, dropping to 9.7 percent, down from a revised 9.8 percent in November. The jobless rate was 10.4 percent in December a year ago.

The state rate declined because 11,500 Georgians went back to work in December. Statewide, there were 600 new construction jobs, and manufacturing grew by 400 jobs. Job gains also came in information services and trade and transportation.

As a long time customer of Gateway Bank and I have kids that attend Ringgold Elementary, GAteway contributes so many ways to our schools. Financially and volunteering. Will this all go away? Will this new bank keep up the involvement that Gateway does? According to other comments there is going to be job loss. That saddens me! Wonder why the sale of such a great institution. You know they are financialy stable or no new company would purchase. We will miss you Gateway

Gateway Bank has approximately 75 employees. It is estimated that between 30 to 35 of these will lose their jobs.

My question is, why has this not been in the Catoosa County news ? It is a very newsworthy event.

First, the actual event of a large community bank selling out should be in the paper, secondly but probably even more important is the loss of jobs.

I hope that this is just an oversight on Catoosa County new's part and not left out intentionally.

Very disappointed but it's not to late to correct.

Gateway Bank is always in the news for all their community support. If they are no longer Gateway Bank, then just think how much the communit will lose - it will have the trickle down effect.

Help those wonderful employees keep their jobs.

I LOVE GATEWAY BANK!!!!!!!!!

wow! Ringgold loves Gateway. Sounds like greed has taken over yet some will lose homes and jobs in spite of previous articles that say employees will still be around. I called today and there will be job loss. Maybe whoever the share holders are will vote this down for the bank and the community.

Stockholders for Gateway Bank and Trust should vote "NO" on the merger. This is a sale, not a merger. Gateway employees will lose their jobs. Many employees were told they "Would Always Have a Job with Gsteway." They left positions to begin Gateway Bank and make it successful, which it has been and continues to be. Gateway Bank is one of the more successful community banks around and this is such a shame. The North GA economy does not need another hit and this one will be substantial. I ask as a customer of Gateway since the doors were opened, that the stockholders vote "NO." Save our bank and save the jobs of the most efficient, caring bank personnel that I have every encountered.

THat rate will certainly rise when Gateway Bank & Trust lays off 30 to 40 people if that merger goes thru. So most importantly for shareholders VOTE NO.. SAVE THEIR JOBS! SPREAD THE WORD! VOTE NO. We love our bank!!!!!
