CHICKAMAUGA - If there were any worries on the part of Gordon Lee Middle School basketball coach Chris Edge that his Trojans might be a little tight before Thursday's regular season home finale against Ringgold, they didn't last very long.

Needing a win to sew up the North Georgia Athletic Conference regular season title and the No. 1 seed for the upcoming NGAC tournament, the Trojans sent word quickly that an upset was simply not going to happen.

Crashing the boards and swarming on defense, the Trojans jumped out in front and stayed out in front for an easy 50-22 victory that kept them perfect in league play at 14-0 with two games remaining.

Gordon Lee (14-1 overall) got out to an 8-2 lead in front a packed house, then scored the first 14 points of the second quarter to take control for good. Only a basket with 0.3 seconds left in the half kept Ringgold from going scoreless in the second quarter against relentless defensive pressure.

"I never have to beg these guys to hustle and play hard," Edge said of his team. "They just do it. They fight and they don't quit until they get the ball. They're really fun to watch when they hustle like that."

Up 29-11 at halftime, Edge rested several starters for all or most of the second half, but the reserves didn't miss a beat as they held the Tigers to just 11 points in the second half, including three in the fourth quarter.

"We're really deep this season," Edge said. "The seventh grade team only lost three games all year and we've been able to get them some minutes with the varsity so we ought to be pretty good next year too."

A total of 11 different players got in the scorebook for the Navy-and-White, led by Andrew Towns' 15 points. Hayden Howard went for 11 while Tucker Bradley had six in just one half of play.

Cade Gilbert paced Ringgold with six points.

Gordon Lee will hit the road for their last two NGAC games as they look to complete an unbeaten league slate. Tuesday, they will play at Heritage before traveling to Rossville next Thursday, and Edge hopes to keep his team focused on the task at hand.

"We want to make sure we do everything we need to in practice to put ourselves in the best position to do what we need to do in games," he explained. "Like (college coach) Tubby Smith says, you never want to be too high or too low. (Securing the No. 1 seed) is good, but that's not our only goal this season."

Ringgold will host the NGAC tournament, starting Feb. 6.

The girls' game turned out to be nothing like the 33-32 nailbiter Gordon Lee won at Ringgold earlier in the year.

The Lady Trojans (12-3, 12-2) stormed out to an 18-4 lead after the first quarter, and kept the Lady Tigers scoreless in the fourth quarter as they cruised to a 44-21 win.

Avrie Weldon led nine different players in scoring for Gordon Lee with 14 points while Sarah Meadows went for six.

Bethany Headrick led Ringgold with 10 points.
