Emory-Oxford’s Kevin Tolbert would lead all scorers with 19 points in the matinee with 19 points. Freshman Quinton Cotton paced the Bobcats with 14 points, while fellow freshman Hunter Ivester finished with 13 points, four steals, three blocks, and three assists.
The Eagles (16-6, 3-2) would come out of the gate on fire, opening the day with a 13-0 run in the first six minutes of play. The Bobcats would cut the deficit to 32-23 at the intermission, and two separate second-half rallies tied the score at 41 and again at 51 with just five minutes left to play.
Defensive efforts by GNTC kept things close late in the game. Leading the way was sophomore co-captain Bud Todd, who recorded seven of his team’s 15 block shots on the afternoon.
“We know how to play catch-up pretty well,” said GNTC head coach David Stephenson, “but we need to come out of the gate strong and not play from behind anymore.”
A bit of history went down on the Bobcat hardwood with nine minutes to go in the game as All-Region and All-District first-teamer Alex Miller passed former Bobcat Kyle Wilson as the program’s all-time leading scorer.
Miller now stands at 646 points during his time with the Bobcats. Wilson, an Armuchee graduate, scored 644 points for the Bobcats from 2009 to 2011 before signing with the Berry College Vikings.
Miller and the Bobcats (7-15, 0-6) still have five more regular season games to play, as well as the NJCAA Region XVII post-season tournament, which takes places in Warner-Robins, Feb. 22-24.
GNTC will play again on Tuesday at Macon State before they join the Lady Bobcats for key region games at West Georgia Tech this Friday in LaGrange.
