Jeff Mullis was named the 2012 Walker County Citizen of the Year by the Walker County Chamber of Commerce at the 30th annual Walker County Gala on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Chattanooga Marriott Hotel at the Convention Center.

The 2011 Walker County Citizen of the Year, Nelda Parrish, presented the award in honor of Mullis’ dedication to many community, civic and religious organizations.

Growing up in Chickamauga, Mullis’ parents taught him at a very early age how to be active in and give back to his community. They encouraged him to be the man he is today and their influences can still be seen in his life.

After being a local fireman for many years he was elected in November 2000 as a senator in the Georgia General Assembly. Sen. Mullis is serving his sixth two-year term in this capacity, representing the 53rd District. He is always helping constituents, businesses, and community leaders on state and federal issues whether in Atlanta or Walker County.

He currently chairs the Senate Music Committee and the Halls of Fame Joint Committee, and serves as chairman emeritus of the Sportsman Caucus, whose mission is to promote hunting, fishing and the Second Amendment.

Mullis is a proven dedicated leader in Walker County, northwest Georgia region and the entire state. He has been recognized by Georgia Trend Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Georgia for four consecutive years for his work on illegal immigration issues and has been listed by James Magazine as one of the Most Influential Political Leaders in Georgia for six consecutive years.

He has been the recipient of numerous awards in recent years including: the Governor Zell Miller Public Policy Leadership Award from the Georgia Economic Development Association, the GMA “Champion of Georgia Cities” award three times, the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia “Legislative Service Award” four times.

He has received the Legislator of the Year Award for his dedication to Georgia Fire Service, and the 2011 Walker County Patriotic Citizen of the Year Award among many others. The GBI has recognized him for his support of the GBI’s DNA Database, and Get Georgia Moving and the Metro Atlanta Chamber for his work on Transportation Issues.

“He also serves as the executive director of the Northwest Georgia Joint Development where I personally get to see him in action daily,” said Stephanie Snodgrass, Walker County Chamber president. “He is always talking with local businesses, citizens and leaders working to make northwest Georgia and Walker County a better place to live, work and play.

“Even though his positions in the Senate and the Joint Development Authority keep him very busy he still finds the time to participate in community events, attend First Baptist Church of Chickamauga, and help those in need readily.

“If asked, he always states that even with the honors of many groups and organizations, his primary focus is northwest Georgia.

“Not only is he an outstanding citizen and wonderful asset to Walker County he is also a wonderful husband to his wife Teresa and father to his three children.

“Senator Mullis has touched many lives and has graciously devoted much of his life to Walker County.”

There are people out in our community every day that read to the blind, deliver meals to the elderly, comfort the terminally ill and generally make the world a better place for no pay (and too little recognition) and this award is given to...A POLITICIAN?

You people in the chamber have your priorities upside down. This is embarassing.

Actually the public is who nominates the candidates for the Citizen of the Year so if you have someone in mind that you think deserves it then you should nominate them next year.

"Actually the public is who nominates the candidates for the Citizen of the Year so if you have someone in mind that you think deserves it then you should nominate them next year."

That makes my point even better. (Thanks). There were other candidates that don't get paid (by the taxpayers) and wined and dined (by lobbyists wanting favors)and the chamber picked a political critter who's ambition is to hold office for life and retire to peddle his influence. Sweet deal, how do we get that?
